With Paris Fashion Week closing the fashion month madness, jewellery was the head-turning accessory at the spring 18 shows.
The takeaway message from the spring season catwalks? Signature jewellery is making a bold statement and is something to stock up on for spring 18. Mary Sanderson jewellery consultant and editor of Where It’s At says, “Go as big as you can, either with an enormous bejewelled stone or a dazzling diamond drop. Pull your hair back, and let your earrings do the talking.”

Crystalline
From classic hoops to water drop earrings and rope-long water pearl necklaces; signature jewellery this season proved to be all about transparency.
Accompanied by deconstructed tailored outfits at Altuzarra, crystalline horn hoops added edge to the looks. Discussing transparent jewellery, London College of Fashion student Weiqi Yap says, “Since they’re transparent, you don’t have to worry about them colour-clashing with your outfit, unlike most metals. I’d personally style them with slicked back hair, so they get all the attention.”
Shoulder grazing
Long and bold tassel earrings featured at Paris Fashion Week. Saint Laurent looked to the East for jewellery inspiration by paying homage to the Inka culture with armour tassel earrings, while Giambattista Valli focused on ‘mother nature’ with beaded signature shoulder dusters.
In contrast, Stella McCartney remained true to her brand’s hallmark, with earrings that were affluent yet geometric in their outcome, which added an elegant touch to the spring 18 collection.
Statement rock
Business of Fashion discussed this year’s statement earring trend, “Essentially, statement earrings are what shoes were to Carrie Bradshaw for a generation who wear Stan Smiths.”
Coming in metallic rimmed egg-shaped silhouettes at Maison Margiela, cockscomb tones at Dries Van Noten and Aztec-inspired at Saint Laurent. Designers this season took conventional jewellery to the next level. “With high-end and high-street designers both creating ‘face furniture’, there is so much choice for consumers to buy into the statement earring trend,” says Aurora Starbuck, PR Manager at JAPR London.
Delicate vs girly – azure and candy-red trinkets
Sweeping silver and gold under the mat, sharp blue and candy-red tones rang in a flamboyant jewellery season. At Balenciaga models in short bobs conquered the runway in chunky plate earrings. While Chanel and Dolce & Gabbana showed eye-catching oversized, but intricate drop earrings.
Cherry-red earrings and geometrical statement pieces lured fashionistas to a luscious, playful catwalk show. Dolce & Gabbana scored with a fun and girly theme with playing cards and mini cars gracing models’ headbands and necklaces. Simone Rocha stepped up the game with liquorice-inspired earrings accompanied by candy red hairpins. To spice up the ‘nerd factor’ at Balenciaga, chunky gilded earrings in hues of red, conquered the runway.
Royalty
Princesses and queens galore. Dolce & Gabbana pulled off a glitzy display, with chunky necklaces and pearl tiaras. Embellished charm bracelets and matching kiss-lock handbags set the theme at Alexander McQueen. Saint Laurent surprised with diamond-studded cuffs, under the new direction of Anthony Vaccarello.
