It’s been now a month since I’ve heard about the Makeup Genius app. I was planning to write a review on it earlier, but unfortunately I found out the app wasn’t offered in the Austrian App Store. The more I’m happy, I had the chance to test it and to play with it last weekend.
Makeup Genius – What it is
The app was launched by L’Oréal and offers instant makeup application through camera. This can be a huge benefit when we think about testing products in shops. To be honest, I could spend hours in the drugstore testing lippies and blush, but I’m really careful when it comes to tester. Which person has applied that lipstick before? – Actually you don’t know. Although the products are clean in the shops, I still have my doubts about trying them on. Call me an over cautious person, but that’s something I’d never do. If I want to test them, I always do on the back of my hand. When I heard about the “wonder app” I got curious and I was really interested in testing it. It’s really easy to use and here’s how:
All you got to do is calibrate your face with the front camera of your phone. If you made your choice the makeup selection comes next.
You can choose from a range of bronzer, lipstick, eyeshadow and eyeliner – I decided to go for eyeliner first ;) If you have doubts about mixing colours there’s also another option available with prepared looks.
From J.Lo to blue smokey eyes and various event looks – you can choose from a range of beauty looks in the Makeup Genius app. They are created by L’Oréal makeup artist Miriam Jacks and you’ll find them in a separate section called “How To”with step-by-step video tutorials.
When you’ve chosen your final look, you can easily save it to your profile. You can save all your looks and built a little collection, which you can look up every time.
Bar code scanner
Bar code scanning is another great option if you’re unsure about a product you want to buy. I haven’t tested the feature yet, but I’ll let you know asap.
The lesson is clear…
The result is really good and I have expected it to be much worse. I know I’m quite negative when trying something new :P I think the app is really helpful and a further step in the beauty section but I have my doubts, if this is going to prevail in future. As a makeup artist I can say that no app can actually give you the true colour of a product unless you try it on yourself. So this is something that the developers should think about when making improvements. From the looks that I’ve tested so far, there was one that suited me perfectly – the winged eyeliner and the red lip! A classic one and definitely one of my fave looks ;) The others that I’ve tried turned out different and made me look like a drag queen, which was actually the fun side of testing the app. However, I think the Makeup Genius app is great if you want to test makeup products without applying them – No tissues needed, no mess at all!
